Print, broadcast or freelance journalists in the United States and Austria ages 21 to 38 can apply for a six-week fellowship.
The International Center for Journalists and the Kuratorium für Journalistenausbildung (KfJ) seeks applicants for their U.S.-Austrian Journalism Exchange Fellowships, which gives journalists an opportunity to report from and travel in each other's countries.
The program is open to journalists who are employed by or freelance for a newspaper, news magazine, broadcast station or news agency. Applicants must have demonstrated journalistic talent with at least three years of experience, and a strong interest in U.S.-European affairs. Foreign language proficiency is not required, but it is strongly preferred and will be taken into consideration during the selection process.
Fellows receive adequate living stipends during their fellowship assignments. The program also pays directly for international and domestic travel expenses, living expenses in Washington and Vienna, as well as insurance costs and cultural and transportation allowances.
After receiving a joint orientation session in Washington, the American fellows travel to Vienna and the Austrian journalists begin their fellowship in Florida at the GOP National Convention to report for their home media organizations. For six weeks, fellows will work at host newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations under the supervision of an editor. The program ends with all fellows reuniting in Vienna for a reception and final program evaluation.
The fellowship program is funded by donations from Austrian government and U.S. government agencies, and private-sector corporations and foundations.
